Clearly more teams need to be in with a shot at the silverware for more of the season. 4 semi-finalists out of 14 is not good enough. What would be better out of:
A)Ranfurly shield
B)FA Cup
C) extended play-off series.
If C then what format.
Play it on Mars or as far away from the southern hemisphere as possible, E T needs more rugby, we don’t
Four teams are fine. All 14 teams have a chance to be one of those four, its up to them to be good enough. They can change its format in a few years when they add new teams.
got to agree with Alex expanding it at the moment would be ridiculous. I would rather see a home and away fixture with winner take all and forget the play offs.
Extend whole comp to 20 teams
a team from melbourne
a team from buenos aires
a team from L.A
a team from Vancouver
a team from Tokyo
& a team from the pacific islands
Then split into 2 pools
e.g.
pool 1
Blues
Cheifs
Crusaders
Bulls
Stormers
Lions
Reds
L.A
Vancouver
Buenos Aires
Pool 2
Hurricanes
Highlanders
Brumbies
Waratahs
Force
Melb
Cheetahs
Sharks
Tokyo
Pacific Islands
After 10 weeks of round robin (some games to be played on sunday arvo, sunday night and monday night) (great t.v.)
Then top 4 teams from each pool go into a top eight and play the same play off series as the NRL.
pool 1 team 1 vs pool 2 team 4
pool 2 team 1 vs pool 1 team 4
pool 1 team 2 vs pool 2 team 3
pool 2 team 2 vs pool 1 team 3
then lowest ranked two teams that loose in first week drop out of comp whilst highest ranked 2 teams that win get following weekend off. the 4 other teams play each other to see who play in the semi finals against teams 1 & 2, then of course semi finals, grand final
kind of complicated to understand at first but works well in the NRL
Why would you need more teams, if the same teams dominate the finals. The current teams need to work on making the finals. It should always be quality not quantity. Also if there were more teams, therefore more games, this would reduce how many international tests are played. Rugby players are still only human.
They did try to have an expanded finals series but this got knocked back because SA wanted to have at least one team in the top 5 or 6 for the playoffs even if none of their teams qualified.
The S14 admin is looking at trying to get the Cherry Blossoms into Super 14 due mainly to drawing power and monies available through Japan. Whether you would then need a 16th team is a moot point because we already have byes in the draw with only 14 teams.
